THE MERFOLK
MERFOLK
5/29/20
The Merfolk race was designed to exist on planets that had no land but were rich in oxygenated water. They’re hollow porous bone structure and gills allow them to swim with ease and breathe under or out of the water. They have been able to evolve very tough skin and move through the water at incredible speeds. The gill structure behind their elongated, pointy ears and along the jaw has caused them to slur their speech into gurgly throat talk with abrupt pops and emphasis on the word endings.
They have thin heavily lidded, clearish blue or green eyes, high cheekbones, thin lips and almost non-existent ears. Their hair is strandy and matted, almost seaweed with no body hair at all. Their bodies are thin as well with cord like muscles and a slick gelatinous blue hewn skin. They have webbing between their fingers and toes and thin nails. Both women and men have large chests and narrow hips.
Their light body mass 80 to 110 pounds (stones) allows them to be inexhaustible. Under water they are quick and precise. Out of water they tire easily and drag around.
The Merfolk are generally a grumpy group. They place chores and task completion above joy and play. Most are either builders or fishermen. There are very few entertainers and they tend to be epic moralized performers. The family structure is loose in this society as well. Parenting is a community thing. Mating is random and non-binding. Several hatchlings are born at a time but only a few develop to adulthood. They mature quickly and rarely live more than 50 years (100 seasons).
Their speech is slurred and punctuated with hisses as are their names. Multisyllable names indicate lineage. Only the first letter is capitalized and the lineage is separated with hyphens.
