THE ARK - WHAT'S A CUBIT

5/18/20

The book of Genesis describes Noah's Ark as a wooden vessel 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high (a cubit being, for my literary purposes, 7 palms or about 21 inches). Therefore, the ark’s measurements would be; 516 ft by 86.0 ft by 51.6 ft. These proportions are ideal to balance the demands of sea-kindliness, hull strength, and stability. The Ark's size is equivalent to an average cargo vessel by today's standards, which is in line with the limits of timber construction.

The “Gopher wood, described in the bible had to have been an extremely hard wood with little absorption. The terminology also suggests the loading door was in the stern of the middle deck.

Over a year long voyage I assumed there must have been need for some sort of navigation, thus the pointed bow and rudimentary rudder.
