The story starts with the waking of the crew from cryogenics. They go through the process of checking out their ship and situations.

This is the part of the book that I use to introduce and build the characters, lay the ground work for a plot, and introduce some intrigues.

Briefly, the captain, Ralph Morely, is a career officer that saw duty in the moon base development as a fly over scout, in the asteroid mining constructs as a cover pilot, a line officer organizing the Jupiter moon patrols and finally with his first full command aboard the Winkel.

He is easy going but firm. Still in peak health though well into his fifties, (late 600s with the cryogenic experience).

Ralph never married viewing his ships as his family and the void of space his mistress.
