ALTERNATIVE USES (OFFICE SUPPLIES)
5/2/20
Continuing our look into alternative use I chosen office items. You may not always be at home or near your bug out bag. Look over (and again add to and share) this list of things you may find at the office.
Office Supplies
Elmer’s Glue
As kids just about all of us put Elmer’s glue on our hands and peeled it off. While this is fun as a child, it’s actually pretty
useful as an adult. If you get a splinter or metal sliver in your skin you can cover it with a drop of the glue, and when dry peel it off. The sliver will come with it.
Super Glue
Super glue, like duct tape, is often considered a fix-it-all. Super glue can also be used to treat some small cuts and minor wounds. It needs to be said, before you start throwing away your bandages, there are limitations and misconceptions that go with using super glue for sealing up cuts and wounds. First of all, super glue contains a chemical called cyanoacrylate. It is essentially the same formula that was used as a medical glue in the Vietnam War.
There are, however, some clear differences between super glue and the formula used in Vietnam. The key difference is that the medical glue used in Vietnam was designed specifically for the purpose of sealing up wounds.
With this in mind it needs to be said that while you can seal up wounds with super glue you need to do so with caution and understanding that you could actually cause skin irritation. It is a method that should only be used in emergency situations and for a very limited time.
Wooden Ruler
A simple wooden ruler is perfect for making a splint. Place it against the broken limb and wrap with fabric. Don’t wrap completely with duct tape though, as it’ll be too difficult to remove.
Paper clip
A paper clip has a crazy number of different uses. It is a rigid surface that is also malleable (bends easily), giving it extraordinary potential if used correctly.
This simple often taken-for-granted item can be very useful in a survival scenario. The many possible uses of this clip include: as splint for minor injuries of toes and fingers, antenna for small electronics, as fingernail cleaner, as an emergency fishhook, as a component for making a compass, as a safety pin and as a threading tool.
Pen/Pencil
The saying that the pen is mightier than the sword has never been truer. There are
numerous more uses for a pencil than to simply mark things down. A pencil can prove to simply be a stick, a neutral object that can be combined with other objects to create a better tool. Perhaps more importantly it can serve as a tool that will allow you to gather your thoughts and wits to help you formulate a plan.
